Lot # 1945. Bank of Toronto Back Proof-Specimen Pair

 

The following items represent a small sample of the Canadian Banknote proofs, specimens, vignettes and production material in this auction and include many unique and exciting items from Canadian numismatics. A number of discovery pieces as well as unique banknote models, artwork, design elements and vignettes used on Canadian banknotes over the last 150 years are being offered for the first time. This is one of the largest offerings of this type material in many years and will probably not be repeated anytime soon.

 

 

Lot # 1939.  The Canadian Bank of Commerce.  $5. P-S970 Unlisted. Unique approval proof mockup or model on large white card. Photo-proof of frame with vignette pasted to card along with separate red "00000" serial numbers, cycloid tint and olive green undertint, lower central bottom copyright imprints. Approval signature on the bottom dated "16 Aug / 34". Top has additional archival notations. Back of card has multiple different date stamps by Canadian BNC. Deserves further research. Unlisted as proof. Choice Unc..
 
 
Lot # 1950. Bank of Canada 1935 Issue $500 Progressive Proof. P-54; P-55 Unlisted.  4 different face and back proofs. All are mounted on manila file folders and are in mixed condition. 1). $500 progressive proof of borders and denominations without text or vignette for both P-54 and P-55; 2-4). Denomination counters for P-54 and 55 of the numeral "500" printed on india paper and mounted in manila file folders. All of the vignettes were used in the design and production of this banknote and could be found on the face or the back of the note in the corners or as part of the denomination vignettes. Condition ranges from VG to XF. All with archival notations and hand written "Die Destroyed 10/11/37". Historic and interesting archival material from this popular issue.
 
 
 
Lot # 1987. Bank of Canada 1935 Issue Proof Titles. ca.1935. 3 different LDP "Bank of Canada" proof back titles printed on india paper and mounted in archival manila file folders with plate numbers on the india paper and on the top of the manila file folder. Each file folder has written underneath the impressions "Die & Roll Destroyed 10/11/37". Proofs are from back titles of the 1935 Issue, P-38 to P-57. One is a compound proof with 2 different titles and the others are single impressions of "Bank of Canada". All have different engraved decorations at the ends of the title. Also included are 3 file folders that have had the vignettes cut out, but a photo-copy of the contents is included. Rare Bank of Canada proofs. VG to XF condition. Rare "Bank of Canada" archival material that is unique in this format. Deserves further research. Canadian BNC.
 
 
Lot # 1959. Bank of Canada Portrait Vignettes (7).  Seven different Large Die Proofs with large margins. All have Bank of Canada imprint on bottom with name on bottom. All are printed by Canadian BNC. Vignettes are printed on india paper on white card 3.5x3.75 inches. Condition is XF throughout with a few having evidence of light handling. Portraits include H.M.King George V not wearing crown with plate X -V-114 on bottom, used on P-38 and P-39, $1 Bank of Canada, 1935 Issue; H.M. Queen Mary facing right, similar to vignette used on the Dominion of Canada, P-35, $5, Series of 1924-25; HR H Princess Elizabeth, used on P-46 and P-47, $20. Plate X-V-125 on bottom; H.M.King George V wearing crown with plate X -V-126 on bottom and H.M.Queen Mary, facing left, with plate X-V-127 on bottom, both used on Bank of Canada, P-48 and P-49, $25 1935 Commemorative Issue; HR H Prince of Wales, used on P-50 and P-51, $50. Plate number X-V-116 on bottom; H.R.H. Duke of Gloucester used on P-52 and P-53, $100. Plate number X-V-124 on bottom; Unique Model of vignette with H.M.King George VI pasted over the original name below portrait used on the 1937, Bank of Canada Issue, P-58 through P-63, $1 through $50. Also includes LDP of John McLeod from The Bank of Nova Scotia. Rare if not unique group.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Lot # 1947. The Canadian Bank of Commerce Uncut Back Specimen Sheet of 4. $10. P-S961 Unlisted. 1888, 1893 Issues. Uncut and unfinished specimen sheet of 4 on banknote paper. Back is completely printed in blue with bank building. Face has undertint printing and counterfeit protector "TEN" only in yellow and red. Purple rectangular "Return to Issue Room, To Be Held for Reference SEP - 1902" on upper right corner of back. POC's on all notes. Choice condition. Lot # 1932.  The Canadian Bank of Commerce Model.  $50. P-S968 Unlisted.  Unique approval mockup or model on large white card, with small changes requested. Photo proof of frame with vignette pasted to card along with separate title, cycloid tint, denomination and red "00000" serial numbers. Multiple approval signatures on the bottom and dated "17/9/20". Back of card has multiple different date stamps by ABNC. Pick lists this note dated 1917, but this approval proof seems to indicate that the note was first designed in 1920. Deserves further research. Unlisted as proof. Stray ink markings on top border and onto note, otherwise Choice Unc.
 
 
 
 
 
  Unique Bank of Canada Title
From 1935 Series of banknotes
Lot # 1961. Bank of Canada Original Artwork for 1935 Series. 1935. P-38 to P-57. Pen, ink and paint of "Bank of Canada" title in arch used on the back of the 1935 Issue with archival notations and instructions. Back has Oct.22, 1935 green handstamp. Printed on 9.75 by 6 inch white card. Unique in archive. Canadian BNC
 
Specimen banknote of P-88, Banque Du Canada - Bank of Canada. Also includes unique proof multicolor undertints of face and back that are printed on white paper and pasted to manila archival sheet with archival notations about the undertint. XF condition. Both are coming loose from the mounting but are still attached on the left. Notations state "1st Set Of Plates - Oversize - Bank of Canada $10 Face". Both are very similar to final undertints, but have slight differences from the final versions. Unique Canada banknote production items; Sheet also includes undertints for Venezuela, Banco Central De Venezuela, P-31 and P-32. Both in XF condition. Rare banknote production material.
 
 
Lot # 1970. Dominion of Canada, Lord Roberts Proof. 1901, 1924. P-25A; P-34A. $1,000 LDP of Lord Roberts. Printed on india paper on large card. Rare vignette of rarer banknote. Printed by ABNC-Ottawa. Unique in archive. Possibly only used for P-25A since Canadian BNC printed P-34A. Choice Unc. ABNC-Ottawa.
