This auction includes over 150 exceptional rare and unique philatelic lots in this section.  Over 50 unique postage and revenue stamp printing plates from the archives of the American Bank Note Company will be offered for the first time to the collecting public.  Included are printing plates of postage and revenue issues of Cuba, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, U.S. and other countries.  In addition, there is an outstanding collection of U.S. Postal Notes as well as other U.S. Post Office Department related material.  A considerable number of items in this group are new to the collecting community and are discovery pieces.  

 
 

 
  Lot # 7 in auction. On india paper, block of nine in grey-black with vertical carmine "SPECIMEN." overprint on each proof, full to wide margins all around, Extremely Fine, scarce in this outstanding condition.

 
 
  Lot # 132 in auction. Printing plate. 68x57x6mm steel die, state seal vignette. XF condition. Printed by either SBNC or RBNC. Unique in archive.
 
 
 Lot # 66 in auction Printing plate. 63x63x4mm steel die, shows complete design of stamp, die "994". XF condition. Unique in archive.
 
 
 
 
Lot # 150 in auction. Specimen Registered Series A, 6 7/8% Bond, Due 1997. Olive green border and vignette. Postal Service Bond. "U.S.Mail"" Eagle Logo. The top line reads "The United States Postal Service, an independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States, acknowledges itself indebted....". This should be considered a U.S. federal bond. Rare. No coupons. XF condition.
 

Lot # 10.  Unique 5c Indian Head Essay Proof. Proposed essay design proof printed on 3 inch square piece of paper with black borders on outer margins away from design. The proof also has 4 guide 'dots' for aligning the printing plates. XF condition. Unique in archive. Printed by ABNC and from their archives.
 
 
 
 
 Lot # 74. ABNC Essay of Columbia Facing Left - Cut Down LDP. Scott # 79-E11 Unlisted. Unique cut down LDP printed on thin white paper (not india). Hand scrip on top "Roll 119" and printed #340 on bottom left. Black on white paper. Lot # 19. Stamp Vignette and Flag of China. Scott #B4-9 Unlisted. Two vignettes affixed on filing envelope, "Flag Of China / Dr. T.V. Soong / Special V-81433" and vignette design of war refugees which was used on China's 1944 semi-postal Set (Scott #B4-9), design is framed by Chinese lettering also used on the stamps and a caption at the top "Republic Of China / Special V-82101", both with "American Bank Note Company" imprints. Rare Chinese philatelic proof.
 
 
Unlisted George Washington Vignette Essay.  
 
Lot # 141 in auction. Scott #72 Unlisted Essay. Small vignette affixed on filing folder, die "V-39931", "Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York" imprint, this vignette was used on the 90c Washington 1860/75 issues. Unlisted Essay proof. Unique in archive.

 Lot # 89. George Washington Essay Proof Vignette - Incomplete Engraving of Washington Head. Scott #65-E11 Unlisted. 50x53mm manila card with black negative proof impression of George Washington vignette very similar to Scott #65-E11, but in a negative impression and unlisted in this format. Printed on india paper and mounted to manila card. Back has portions of border vignettes and evidently this was cut from a sample book. Inglesia De La Soledad Unique Printing plate. Lot # 20 in auction.  76x83x5mm steel die, airmail stamp showing full design of church with "United States Banknote Corporation" imprint and die "14014", two additional US Banknote imprints at top. XF condition. Unique in archive.
 
 
Lot #  90 in auction.  Complete philatelic advertising card.
  
Sample of one stamp from group of 14 different proof and specimen stamps from Hamilton BNC Philatelic Advertising Card. Lot # 90 in sale.  Philatelic advertising card for stamps designed and produced by HBNC. Card measures 10 by 4 inches with gold foil gilt edges. Front has 14 symetrical arranged border squares with specimen and proof South American stamps in them. Back has advertisement by Hamilton BNC "With Compliments of the HBNC Engraving & Printing Company, 61 Broadway - New York. Steel Plate Engraving and Printing of Bank Notes, Postage Stamps, Revenue Stamps, Railway, State & Corporation Bonds, Stock Certificates.....". All of the stamps, both specimen and proof have purple "Specimen" overprints. Stamps are included from Republica Dominica; Venezuela; Honduras; Ecuador; Guatemala and Peru. Stamps are glued to advertising card. Back of card has glue stains on the 4 corners where mounted in sample book. 2 were found in a Hamilton BNC sample book, each with different stamps. Overall, choice condition. Rare philatelic advertising item.

Lot # 144 in auction.  W. Swaim Unique "Rattle Snake" Border Proof. Scott #'s RS234; RS235. Unique border proof of 6 snake heads with fangs. Printed on india paper and mounted to large manila file card in black. Plate # "V 45131on india paper and also on top of manila card. Slight toning on a few small areas, otherwise in XF condition. This is the only one found in the archive.
